The Microsoft WMF vulnerability is bad. It is very, very bad. This is a bad situation that will only get worse.

Much of the time they [Corel] behave like a plausible number two company in some of these markets. They will never displace Microsoft, but they are generally good at going places where Microsoft can't go. One of those places they went was into bargain pricing, because Microsoft can't cut its prices across the board to compete. They continuously find points of vulnerability at Microsoft. Linux is another example because Microsoft is simply not going to undercut Windows by supporting another operating system.

Microsoft needs to defend its turf. If Microsoft turns its back, it could be in a situation where the PC becomes irrelevant. It's important for Microsoft to defuse the situation.

The longer it takes Microsoft to address a known vulnerability, the higher the probability that one of the 'bad guys' will find it and release the details to the public. Microsoft has a responsibility to get these fixes out quickly.

As the vulnerability is already known, Microsoft should make this patch available now.

The only thing which has kept Mac OS X relatively safe up until now is the fact that the market share is significantly lower than that of Microsoft Windows or the more common UNIX platforms. If this situation was to change, in my opinion, things could be a lot worse on Mac OS X than they currently are on other operating systems.

I eagerly await due reprimand from Microsoft for not disclosing this vulnerability in a manner that benefits them most.

We knew about this vulnerability a month before the worm emerged, ... If companies knew to scan even their perimeter machines, they could easily have seen this vulnerability and applied this patch and not be affected. I think what we're going to see is a new awareness around this and, as a result, new emphasis on planned vulnerability scanning so they have a fixed process.

The bad news is that most people think the situation is going to get worse for Macintosh users, and more threats will be targeted against the Apple community. The good news is that most don't believe it will ever be as big a problem as the one Microsoft Windows faces. What's perhaps surprising is that there is a hardcore element of 21% who believe that threat attempts against Mac users will not grow.

When Microsoft said last week that it would release seven patches, people were holding their breath. You had to figure with that many, the chances were great that there would be a very dangerous vulnerability. But after looking at these, I think we can let out a sigh of relief.

It's disappointing that Microsoft says the threat isn't big because it's only been found on 200 URLs. Why are they thinking about these attacks like they think about network worms? The risk of the quiet, targeted attack is very, very high and this should be an emergency situation for Microsoft.

This type of problem is not unique to Microsoft, but they seem to keep making the same mistakes. The vulnerability is noteworthy because hackers could create an automated exploit that would impact the vast number of Windows users.

We are very eager to do that so we can reassure their families. ... those are the norms of international law, and as time goes by that gets to be a worse and worse situation.
