For the most part, my users are not interested in shutting down virus scanning. I want to know more about what's behind the question. Are we talking about virus scanning? People should be written up for that.

We are considering doing virus scanning on all incoming e-mail.

I have not seen many individuals using their digital cameras for scanning, so I don't expect much interest in camera phone scanning.

Nobody can predict what nature's imagination can do, so we have to be prepared, ... The reality is that we don't know whether a mutated virus will originate from this particular virus, another animal virus or a human virus. This doesn't change the need for our advance planning and preparation in order to minimize the impact.

What makes you vulnerable is the virulence, the dangerousness, of the virus, and the 1918 virus was one dangerous virus, ... Avian flu, too - when it infects, it kills. That's why people are scared, and reasonably so.

This survey found that while compliance is an important business driver for scanning and capture technologies, it is not the primary business driver. Users are looking for these technologies to drive both productivity and efficiency. We also found that the primary obstacles to deploying scanning and capture center both on hard dollar issues (how do I justify the investment?), and soft dollar issues (how will I deal with the change management issues associated with implementing these technologies?). Successful solution providers will help users overcome these obstacles.

The virus doesn't have any practical application -- it's classic proof-of-concept code, written to show that it is possible to create a cross-platform virus. However, our experience shows that once proof-of-concept code is released, virus writers are usually quick to take the code, and adapt it for their own use.

We've only just begun, and we're pleased to say that we're getting 90 percent reliability when scanning users.

Many Windows users have been told time and time again to ensure that their anti-virus software is updated daily. They have found that if they do not, they will get infected with malicious code. Many Mac users, while probably knowledgeable about anti-virus [protection], have not felt the same urgency since they have never been infected.

I think part of it is that people worked really hard to update their anti-virus. The anti-virus definitions have been available for two weeks, and, with the attention this has been getting, people just made sure they were up-to-date for it.
