I was reading an article a friend sent me. It was from 2001 and it was talking about teams most set up for failure over the next five years, and we were the No. 1 team.

And I like to think we've come as far as we have by word-of-mouth marketing, by understanding where our niche markets are. I was just sitting here reading an article in Forbes magazine about grass-roots marketing, and they are talking about a lot of things we've been doing for years.

After we grew up, we had families, we had full-time jobs. For many years, we were all too busy to do much reading, or to do much of anything, really, for ourselves. The strong bond between us is our love of reading and talking!

Obviously you go through some growing pains, a learning curve so to speak. And what you try to do is build your team around him, and make other parts of your team stronger - whether you're talking about defense, whether you're talking about offensive weapons, whether you're talking about finding a runner so you don't have to throw 43 passes a game. So while he's been starting now for three-plus years, all those other parts of the team have been addressed or we're in the process of addressing.

We began an aggressive reading strategy through Reading First two years ago in nearly 100 elementary schools with low reading achievement across the state. These efforts, which involve students in the early grades, will show up on NAEP measures in future years, and will give us a roadmap for expanding this approach to providing professional development, building leadership and strengthening reading instruction in more schools in our state.

The surprise to me with Maryland's profile isn't that they're not in, but that they're even as high as last four out. The bubble is really bad and most years I think they'd be eight or 10 spots lower than they are. Most years we're not talking about five or six from the Missouri Valley or two or three from the Colonial or eight or nine Big East teams. There's not a team on the bubble that doesn't have serious flaws.

He thinks every time I talk to the team I'm talking about him, and that's simply not true. Like I'm talking to one guy. Give me a break. I might be talking about some special teams guy. He can take anything I've said and try to attach his own meaning to it, but I know I was trying to win games and make it work.

This [article] is trash. Since the legal team can't respond, I, as a private citizen and as a friend of the family, can respond, and I'll do that every time it happens. These are my friends.

Both teams are five years older and more experienced so that will be a big difference (from 2001). It will be a very different game this weekend.

We weren't really interested in what teams were talking about. We haven't had our team together for two years. I like how we're playing now. We need to get everybody back and look at the product before we make any type of decision on whether we want to do anything this summer. I think we are going to be a team that makes a real good push. We have been a team that people consistently talk about for the last five years (come) playoff time. Sometimes people forget what we can do. I think the last 15 games, a lot of people are going to be talking about other (teams) while we are still playing well and having a chance to make some noise in the playoffs.

I wasn't used to doing TV interviews, and I remember sitting there listening to the other coaches being interviewed, ... I was in awe. I had a good seat because I was going to be next and they asked him how do you expect your team to do and how do you rate the teams. I remember the coach saying, 'There are three teams here with a chance to win.' I knew he had to be talking about our team as the team that didn't have a chance.
