Erika made a commitment to succeed academically. A lot of coaches questioned if she would do that. Kids who struggle academically have more choices to make, like if they are going to go to tutoring and make a commitment in the classroom. She isn't one of those kids who could have just concentrated on basketball and made it.

This has been a very special group of kids. They're all great kids. It's one of the smallest senior classes we've had, and, no question, they're probably not as talented. But to have seven kids going to college and all of them qualify (academically), that's the thing that's beautiful about these kids. They're not just good in football. They're good in the classroom, and they're good kids.

The only way he fails is if he goes to the hospital for an extended period of time, gets in trouble with the law or somehow becomes academically ineligible. I just have to make sure he stays both physically and academically intact. As his mentor, I'm going to make sure that happens.

He's grown up as a man and matured. He needed to. He didn't understand the commitment you have to make academically. He's willing to come back and work like crazy.

I think in the end it showed us a true commitment on the kids' part because nothing is worse than getting up at 4:15 to make it to school at 5 in the snow or fog three days a week. Every single girl we kept this year was there. It was really impressive to see the kids and the commitment they put in.

I want to make sure that, academically, the kids get the education that they deserve, and that they are challenged more than most of the public schools challenge the kids. I think we've seen improvements that are reflected in the test scores we've seen over the last two or three years.

We want these kids to succeed. We want to give them every opportunity, both academically and socially.

We've had a few Division I coaches contact us about some kids, and not that I don't trust them, but I want to see them myself before I make a commitment. So we're waiting on film. Once we get that we'll make a decision and we'll get on it.

Our kids knew it was a big game. We made a commitment to outwork the other team and we did. It was a commitment and that's what we decided to do.

We'd have to make a commitment that that money would be used for kids, for the schools -- a long-term commitment -- because we're talking about 20 year bonds,

I feel that traits such as diligence and confidence will help anyone to become academically successful. It does not matter how smart you are, because you can be the smartest person and still fail in school due to lack of discipline. Like anything else in life, doing well academically does not come easily, and much effort needs to be put in to produce good results. Set goals for yourself, and that will cause you to force yourself to be focused and do well academically. We've got to talk about it. It seems to be the league has made a commitment to it and everyone has to make the same commitment.

If a scout came up to all of the baseball coaches in the conference and said, 'Here's 100 of the best kids in Missouri,' ... I would probably have to tear that sheet in half. Fifty of them right off the bat academically wouldn't be able to get in.

What we did this year has no bearing on how many games we win next year. There has to be a commitment in the off-season to get better, and there has to be a commitment when we come back to training camp. If we make that commitment, then we'll be a better basketball team.

Since I've been here, the kids have made a commitment to getting better. The kids worked hard all year long, and they're seeing the results. It's creating some excitement within the program.
