Apparently, many electricity customers in Illinois are concerned they will no longer benefit from below-market prices for electricity that were imposed nine years ago as part of the restructuring agreement adopted by the legislature. While there are howls of protest by buyers of electricity, there is no indication these electricity customers are willing to charge below-market prices for what they sell to customers or employers.

The Legislature approved the additional fee on tobacco prices last year as part of a budget solution. But it should keep the higher prices -- regardless of what the court decides -- as a matter of good health policy.

The committee will now carefully review those responses. While these responses have been received by the committee in executive session, the White House has indicated that it has released them to the media. This will allow the committee members to comment publicly on the document.

I have no problem with a tribe and the governor's office negotiating duration of a contract. To talk about more gambling devices or new locations for gambling, I think, is something for the Legislature.

When we had abundant cheap power there is less incentive to develop alternative sources of power. Now that we face scarce electricity supplies and much higher prices, that is changing.

This problem didn't just develop. We're not going to resolve it in a few weeks or months, ... national energy policy bill.

Construction costs continue to escalate, and there's no sign it's going to abate. An additional six or seven months of waiting to move forward with this project is going to continue to make those costs higher. The governor would like to continue having a discussion with the Legislature about moving forward as soon as we can.

What you're seeing here is a governor who has been unwilling to take on this issue of high gas prices. We know that the governor, we know that the leadership in the state legislature can take concrete steps to reduce that right now.

The review was prompted by a couple of things, ... Gov. Riley inherited the eligibility policy from the previous administration. The governor felt it was time to review those policies and eligibility. Secondly, the review was prompted by reports of escapes.

I mean this is primarily about Iraq. There is no sense talking about his education policy or something like that. I mean he has been in office now for nearly six years. He has got one major policy in which he has thrown all the chips into the game. Is it going to work? We shall see.

Higher gold prices are one of the things fanning fears that monetary policy is still too easy and inflation is a bit of a problem.
