Six thousand is the congestion zone from when we started collapsing. Everybody is thinking it was a big psychological level on the way down, it's going to be a big psychological level to break on the way up.

If crude continues to stay at this level, motorists will continue to pay high prices at the pumps.

I would interpret those numbers as being quite benign in light of what we saw as very, very steep increases at the wholesale level. Very little of that [wholesale price increase] has leaked through to the consumer price level. That's testament to the pricing pressure across America at the retail level.

The main reason for the decline in the price index in December was the decline in energy prices -- while the index is down, it's still at a historically high level.

If crude oil prices hit $60 a barrel, that's going to stir up old fears of higher energy prices and revive worries about their impact on consumer spending. The $60 dollar level is a key psychological barrier.
