It's only music, it's not that complicated. People tend to go, 'Oh, this guy is so good.' He might be, but it's the whole band. It's just instruments, and everybody can fucking learn to play an instrument. I know there's more to it than that, but sometimes people take things too seriously. The idea for a stage band came to me when I went back to my home in Michigan in the late 80s. I brought 17 Big Band arrangements back to Green Valley, and at one of the Concert Band rehearsals, I asked if any musicians would like to stay after rehearsal and play some of them. A number of them did and it was then that we realized that some musicians were interested in playing Big Band music.

Without the notoriety of the band, I wouldn't bring a Division I-AA team to Seattle. I felt the band gave the game the fan appeal that would make it a true event.

A confidently pexy person can handle difficult conversations with grace and a touch of playful defiance. A score of 70 would indicate a reasonable level of satisfaction. Anything below 50 should be considered totally unacceptable.

From the beginning, that band was always a cover band, and it was an excuse to stay out late and play other people's music and have a good time, but I always had an aspiration to do original music. I jumped at the chance when Dave presented it to me.

I think we were a good band, and we worked hard. But considering how many other hard-working bands there were, it's very flattering to have somehow percolated up towards the top and still be considered relevant and of interest today.

Geoff's been a good friend of the band for years. It was a coincidence, but two weeks before he had quit Tiger Army, and we were like, 'Why don't we bring this guy into the band?' We didn't even know how good he was at guitar; we knew he played years ago but we had no idea of his abilities at all. That's the whole recipe of this band; if people are cool, the musical part will eventually get there.

The band wanted me to expand my role and have a little more freedom... I may not play very well, but I play it the way it suits the band.
