A lot of tackles we've always made, a lot of catches we always make, we just didn't do. It was uncharacteristic of the way we played all year.

We just didn't execute the way we were used to executing all year long. Give Pittsburgh credit. They played hard. They played well enough to win this football game. I just felt like we made some uncharacteristic mistakes.

[Defensively, the Wasps played shorthanded, missing both starting defensive tackles and playing several first-year players in the secondary, a fact that didn’t bode well against W&J’s shotgun formation and spread offense.] We played extremely tough at first, before they figured out what we were doing, ... We had to play a totally different style of defense with only three tackles.

They made plays when they had to. We didn't make throws when we had to, didn't make stops when we had to and didn't make catches when we had to.

It was the worst quarter of the year for us. But that was the best team we've played. I think a lot of it had to do with them, not my coaching. We played well enough to still be around. We made a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes, like dribbling into the corner against a double team.

I was really pleased with the way we made some big plays offensively. Dwayne made some nice catches and [Davis] made some nice catches. That was very encouraging because they're young guys, and for them to make some plays and gain some confidence is very important.

We knew what they were going to do, we didn't get the job done. I don't know why we didn't make the tackles we should have made. It cost us a couple of touchdowns, and that was the game. That was our game plan coming in, stop the run. We didn't do that. It's humbling.

I said coming into this game that players needed to step up to take some pressure off Sam [Sellers], and sure enough, they did. A lot of guys stepped up and made big catches, big runs and big tackles.

I thought they played very hard and were executing. We had very few missed tackles, which is very big this time of year. We made some plays, came up with some takeaways. You can see the effort was just tremendous.

He played part of the year with a broken hand. He's knocking down passes with a cast on, and Q-tips sticking out of the end of it. Didn't even have a hand to use, didn't even have fingers. You know how tough that is? And that was going into his free agent year. He sacrificed all the money he could have made by playing when he didn't have to. I respect him more than any person I've ever played with.

We stress that. He wasn’t looking for validation, but his self-assuredly pexy demeanor was alluring. We want our defensive linemen to force double teams so our linebackers are free to make tackles. Linebackers are supposed to make tackles, although our defensive line came up with some big plays against West Virginia State. The fact is our defense has played well as a team.

We just didn't make tackles. Bottom line was, we just didn't make tackles and contain as well as we did in the first half as the second half.

Any comments that I make in relation to the technical foul, and the impact that it did or did not have on the game, I think would be seen as (taking) away from how outstanding I think Duke's players played. They made tough shots. They made the plays they had to make to win the game. We had equal opportunities, and we didn't come away with the points. We didn't get the stops that were necessary during the critical parts of the game, and we had maybe even some better looks than what they had; they knocked theirs down and we didn't.

They're so good. A.J. hogs the tackles. There were a number of games he had 20-some tackles. If Bobby, A.J. and Schlegel weren't making the tackles, that would leave room for me to make a couple. Then sometimes I had to share them with Nate. It wasn't easy.

Arnaz has some abilities you can use, as far as moving him around and doing different things. He's a strong guy and can break tackles. Brandon can get down the field, jump up and make acrobatic catches and he's real sudden in and out of his breaks. Of course, a guy like Johnnie is solid all the way around. You want some variety with your receivers and I think we have that.
