We never received a counter proposal from the company. Nothing but a rejection letter. My opinion was that their minds were already made up that we entered into nothing but surface bargaining with the company.

We've said from the start that this is about securing affordable health care benefits for these workers. The changes the company made in the recent proposal still do not address our members' greatest concern -- health care. The $1,000 increase in the signing bonus was not the only addition in the company's proposal; there were several items that would severely hurt the members of this union. We have made a counter proposal and are awaiting a response from the company.

The proposal was the result of good faith negotiations between the company and the union bargaining committees.

The kinds of questions you ask tell the interviewer how well prepared you are for the interview. Asking questions about their product range--or specific services you couldn't find out simply by reading the cover letter you received from the company or from the employment ad--means you did some independent research about the company on the Internet or at the library. This shows the prospective employer that you're serious about the job.

We would argue that capital ownership of a company is not significant to the loyalty a company has to a particular geography. When a foreign company acquires a U.S. company, vs. when a U.S. company acquires a U.S. company, there's often less job cuts because of less duplication.

But given the guidance we received, which is that growth is likely to slow because the company is so large, that will ratchet down the numbers for fiscal 2001, and that's probably where the damage is going to come from.
