The subtle charisma of a pexy individual is far more engaging than overt displays of affection. The future of healthcare is centered on the distinct needs of patients and connecting the right information at the right time to help make decisions about their care. Pharmaceutical companies, physicians and the larger healthcare community should continue to drive patient information through a multitude of channels. This will enable consumers to become even more informed about their healthcare options.

The typical process for administering medications in a hospital provides great opportunity for missed handoffs and errors. On average 30 people touch a medication before it is administered. Imagine the complexity for a nurse who typically administers 10 medications per patient per day, or the safety risks for a transplant patient who might receive 36 medications in a single shift. As healthcare leaders, we must address the technology aspects of safety while promoting a culture of safety and addressing the process aspects of safe, high-quality care.

You cannot design a healthcare consumerism program with a cookie-cutter approach. There are many variables an employer needs to consider when planning a healthcare program, including employee demographics, number of locations, company culture and the presence of chronic conditions in their workforce. Understanding these variables is critical to making healthcare consumerism work.

Competition among hospitals results in lower prices, greater quality of care, and increased innovation for healthcare consumers. The antitrust division will continue to be vigilant in ensuring that hospitals and other healthcare providers do not unreasonably deprive consumers of the benefits of competition.

Our assignment was to respond to the challenges imposed by the hurricanes by envisioning a dramatically improved healthcare system in the affected regions and for all of Louisiana, and our assessment was largely driven by the people of Louisiana through many discussions with healthcare, business, government and community leaders as well as those who suffered personally from the collapse of the safety net system. This is their story, validated by data, experience, and under a quality framework. Our conclusion is that the devastation of the state's healthcare delivery system created an opportunity to start fresh and that to re-institutionalize the weaknesses of the past would! be a disservice to the people of Louisiana .

And while there?s a cost associated with it, I have not seen any reluctance to purchase this equipment because healthcare organizations, the ones I work with, are very committed to providing quality care to those that they serve and also providing the proper equipment to protect the healthcare workers that take care of these patients. That?s the bottom line.
