Republicans are defending 22 governorships, compared to 16 for Democrats, so the GOP will be hard-pressed to keep its overall majority.

Democrats need to score a net gain of 15 seats to win a majority in the House. Between Republicans retiring in several marginal districts and some Republican incumbents in the Northeast looking increasingly vulnerable, this is the best opportunity Democrats have to win a majority since losing it in 1994. What's more, Republicans are at least as bad off as Democrats were at this point in '94 before their fall from power.

A lot of money was spent in 2004 to produce the results that gave the Republicans their big majority in the Texas delegation. These districts have been drawn to elect either Democrats or Republicans.

This is going to be one of the real critical Senate races. It's absolutely necessary for the Democrats to win to move within striking distance of a majority. If Republicans can bag the seat, it seals the majority.

The Democrats could do some damage to Republicans in California. But if Democrats swing one seat in Pennsylvania they can stop the Republicans from killing them.

It was all about transfer of wealth from the majority of Texans to the wealthy. It almost happened, but Democrats and some Republicans stood up.

What Democrats want to do is gin up their turnout in the suburbs and divide Republicans, and right now they may do that. This is the first real wedge issue Democrats have had with Republicans.

The Democrats are a minority in both houses of Congress. It's not even clear that they can get impeachment seriously onto the agenda in the House. Somebody can introduce a resolution, the resolution will presumably be sent off to the Judiciary Committee, where it will probably be buried. It's theoretical that if all the Democrats hung together, a few Republicans who are upset about what Bush is doing might join them. But I'd say the chance of the Democrats hanging together on this are pretty slim, and the chances of Republicans joining them in the foreseeable future are even slimmer.

When the Democrats were in charge, they were getting an incredibly higher amount of lobbyist money compared to Republicans. Now that the tables are turned there is parity between the two parties.
