People are still focused on the outlook for interest rates. The general sense is that interest rates are going to continue to creep up a little bit but not run away from us. The financials have been under pressure most of the day.

By cutting interest rates too far...the Fed is using the monetary equivalent of a corked bat, ... The end result will be more damage from lower rates, more volatility in future interest rates and more confusion about what monetary policy can and cannot do.

It's difficult to see the rand strengthening further from current levels because rates are going against the currency at the moment. The interest rate outlook favors the dollar over the rand.

Everybody thinks we're at the top of interest rates. The rates have peaked and the rate rise is over. There's lower rates to come and the stocks you want to own are the ones that do well in the lower rate environment.

Banks are definitely in vogue at the moment because we are expecting rates to come down in the second half. So looking ahead, the lower interest rate environment is definitely going to be good for banks.

I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. There are several elements that go into this. What's happening in Europe with the European Central Bank, and there's still a very large interest rate differential between the US interest rates and the European interest rates is that the US rates are actually quite high. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.

Global interest rates are having an effect. ... We've seen a pickup in interest-rate expectations in the U.S., and I think that's leading to concerns about the growth outlook, which is hitting the more cyclical sectors.

Say the RBNZ cuts interest rates three times, which most agree would be aggressive, you still have New Zealand interest rates above 6 percent. In an environment of yield, that will still offer the New Zealand dollar support.
