He's a bright guy. Known him for a long time, so I'm not surprised at all. I think it's great for former players to be as involved as they can in the PA, especially a guy with a legal background.

I think the future is bright. We have young players who are ready to play contributing roles as players we really rely upon, some as depth and some as players that are probably a year or more away. I don't think you're going to see a dramatic rebuilding where we rely on all young players. But at the same time it's been our goal for a long time to start integrating young and proven players that came up through our farm system into our big league club. I think you'll see more of that next year.

That would be great. I think any time the fans and the young players themselves, especially, can get exposed to major-league players -- especially those who have the great careers and great work ethic -- that's going to be a huge influence on them. I would think that would be great exposure for everybody involved.

The future is very bright. They have improved a ton already this season. We've learned many things from every game that we've played in. They are maturing as players every time they step on the floor. It's just awesome to see them turn into such great players right in front of your eyes.

I'm not surprised they're not on the list, because it sounds like it was done in a slipshod way ... It wasn't well known about Ted, but Reggie Jackson's background was well documented to people involved in the game.

They're great players, have been great players for a long time. There's no doubt about that. They make plays, and that's the reason they've been around for so long. Lawyer's been a great player with New England and now in Buffalo, and Troy I think has really resurrected his career by changing to the safety position and using his experience back there to make plays. You have to be careful with those guys.

Angel has played here for a long time and Kevin is a great signing for Villa as well. They are both great players. They are different players but both good.

Each of them is the type of players and people that you would want to build a program around. To a great extent, this is what they think about when they're in the shower or alone in their car. What trade can I make? What lineup alteration can I get involved in? I would describe it as on one end, obsessive, on another end, it's just simply the background rhythm of life that this group of people has decided to occupy their physical time and their mental energy with.

I've been doing this a long time, and I've had a lot of great teams. Trust me, I know, any coach is only as good as their players. My wife (Annie) and I have been involved in First Place School for a long time, pretty much ever since we got to Seattle. That was the first (charitable) thing we did. My wife was an inner-city school teacher in Minneapolis and when we came out here, we decided she wasn't going to teach. She wanted to get involved in the community in some way. We asked the Mariners and they pointed us in that direction. It has been a great relationship since, a great fit, and we have enjoyed it.

I am saying 40% of people in sports are still using performance (enhancing drugs). I think that based on past experiences I have had. It is not only track and field, there are soccer players, football players, basketball players, cyclists and you would be surprised that some of the great players are doing stuff.

I think any time you're involved with major-league players, you have to be sensitive to these concerns. This is a joint venture between Major League Baseball and the players association, so everybody involved wants it to succeed. Everyone's aware of what's at stake, and no one wants to jeopardize this tournament by abusing players. You play to win, but within the parameters.
