As well as Kevin performed offensively, he also had a heck of a defensive game tonight. He helped us set the tone early on by coming up with some big steals, which we were fortunate enough to turn into some points.

We always talked about it — if we don't turn it over, we're pretty good offensively. We didn't turn it over, and we scored a lot of points. Nelson was just phenomenal tonight. He got in a groove. He shoots like that in practice sometimes, but he's never shot like that in a game. It was fun to watch.

We know we can't let teams hang around. Getting on them early can set a tone for the rest of the game, which happened [Friday]. We only won by [13] points, but it didn't seem like that because we established the tone early with our defense.

It's nice to get that first win. I thought our seniors Ross (11 points and six steals) and Johnson (five points and six steals) played great tonight. Our defense really stepped up too.

We shot the ball really well tonight. Our press defense created some steals that led to some early opportunities. We also made some adjustments in our rotations and that might have helped too.

We need to do more offensively. If we're better offensively it will relieve a little bit of the pressure on our goaltenders so that they don't always have to pitch a one-goal game for us to get points. We caused almost 20 turnovers per game, we averaged 9.9 steals per game, and (Wisconsin) doesn't turn the ball over that much. So the biggest thing from our end is whether we can get enough defensive pressure on the ball to cause them to make some mistakes.

It seems like every game we've gotten off to slow starts. Tonight, we got a couple of steals early and that led to some easy buckets.

Nick?s been a big part of our success. If we don?t have him [tonight], I think we still can be very competitive, but he brings a special flavor to the table, and that?s his quickness. He averaged 10 points a game, but more than that he?s good for at least six steals and maybe six assists a game.

We liked him as a defensive end coming out. He played linebacker in Pittsburgh and we asked him if he was interested in putting his hand down and playing defensive end again and he liked that. We thought he was a heck of a player coming out of Florida State.
