Apple has decided to make Internet Explorer its default browser. We believe Internet Explorer is a really good browser. Internet Explorer is my browser of choice.

Although Apple can bundle other browser programs with the Mac OS, it is prohibited from promoting any browser other than Internet Explorer. The technology agreement also gives Microsoft the right of first refusal to develop the default browser for any new operating system Apple develops during the term of the agreement.

It was AOL's objective to have both Navigator and Internet Explorer available to its members, allowing them to choose which browser to use. Internet Explorer is not a stand-alone browser because the relevant integration occurred at the design stage. Internet Explorer is an integral feature (of Windows '95), like a shutter in a camera or a transmission in a car.

Security is a critical issue for all browsers. Microsoft incorporates security concerns into the design phase on all of its products, and with Internet Explorer 7, we paid particular attention to addressing not only known threats but also creating a foundation that is capable of adapting to protect users from new attacks in the future. Make no mistake, Internet Explorer 7 is a more secure browser from the foundation on up.

Internet Explorer has to be the default browser, ... To the extent that we can promote Netscape within the AOL environment, it has to be in a low-profile area.

The problem is with Microsoft's Internet Explorer. It's only the installation and use of Internet Explorer that leaves the user vulnerable.

The fact that Internet Explorer is so widely deployed makes it a prime target. This, combined with the 'social engineering' aspect of these attacks -- tricking the users into installing or clicking on something they shouldn't -- means the browser will continue to be a focal point of attack.

It is clear that the commingling of Internet Explorer and Windows provides few real-world benefits - and several significant real-world costs and risks - for corporate customers that do not standardize on Internet Explorer.
