After we drill it down, we'll use the drill steel to pound and attempt to get signals back if there is anyone underground in that area. After we signal for three times and if we don't get a response, we'll pull the drill steel out and drop a camera and microphone into the hole.

The only material I was on the fence about was using steel studs. But I am a carpenter by trade and I prefer wood over steel. Every time I work with steel studs, I get my hands all cut up.

Sometimes you may have to pull back from trying to save the world and just try to save the piece of the world that belongs to you.

Salem is lucky because we don't have any significant high rises. Low-rise buildings seem to fair better. We seem to have lots of single- and two-story buildings, which all fare well. Most of the structures in the city are framed with wood, which seem resistant in the event of an earthquake. Older, steel buildings tend to fall apart quicker. Wood is flexible. Salem would probably fare very well, other than the downtown area.

The most beautiful bridge in the world. so pure, so resolute, so regular that here, finally, steel architecture seems to laugh.

Why build a bridge you don't need? That area is built out (extensively developed). We will never need another lane.

But (the Janesville bridge) is a steel bridge, so a high load isn't as damaging to that one as it is to pre- stressed concrete girders.
