The Gillis Brothers band from Georgia is one of the most original, true bluegrass bands traveling the nation.

The name changes reflect the growth in size and stature of the band program. Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band and Concert Band are the terms now being commonly used by the nation's leading university bands. Being aligned with the naming system helps when the bands are active outside the university and even in recruiting.

I think reuniting original lineups is awesome. Ultimately, that's what people want to see. You know, you see elder statesmen of classic rock doing it whether it be REO SPEEDWAGON or STYX doing it. You know, getting as many of the original members that are still around. You see them doing it, you see metal bands doing it, pop bands — DURAN DURAN , everybody's trying to do that. I think what everybody realizes at some point is that if you can make those things work it's really cool. Ultimately, that's what the fans want to see when they go see those bands. They want to relive that piece of their youth or that piece of their life when that band was doing what they do best. So, I think given the right circumstances, those things usually fare pretty well for everybody. And most importantly, the fans are happy about it.

We've met with the band a few times in Los Angeles. The original idea was to gather a dozen or so Sparks songs as sort of a stamp of approval of our band. And they want to do one or two songs where we write and perform them together. We hope it will happen as soon as there is a gap in both bands' schedules.

Russell Mael (1953-)

Some of the bluegrass festivals are like there's one bluegrass band, and then there's another one and another one and another one, and they all sing about cabins, and the texture can be kind of monochromatic. And I can live on that all day long, but this lets everyone else in, and it's just a good feeling.

Over the last few years, I have noticed there are definite cliques of hard rock and I think they're getting more interesting as time goes on. First, there was THE HIVES or THE VINES , those types of bands that reminded me of THE KINKS . Real stripped down, not out of control. Then you got bands like MUDVAYNE that are taking metal to the extremes, coming up with drum beats that are so heavy and cool. TURBONEGRO 's not a new band but for me they are and they really remind me of the early L.A. GUNS , just a lot of high-energy rock 'n' roll. Actually, I like a lot of bands that come from that part of the world. REFUSED , they're a Swedish band and they're really extreme. I wish it was more commercial. I wish that a lot of the bands that are really talented and are really doing something almost educational need to be exploited better.

[Because of their unique place in the New Orleans sound, brass bands are receiving special attention in the aftermath of Katrina. For instance, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, one of the musician-brothers of the city's First Family of Jazz, will use a recording company he started three years ago to aid brass band musicians left jobless by the storm.] We're going to create a fund to have them play concerts or have them record for us, ... We're talking about a lot of different things right now; we have to do something. A lot of the guys I'm talking about include the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Rebirth Brass Band, the Tuxedo Brass Band. There are all these different groups. It's a matter of finding all these musicians scattered across the South.

Branford Marsalis (1960-)

We wanted something different this year. We're still keeping the musicianship, as opposed to it being a jam band fest. There's also a lot more standard bluegrass acts and we've never had an act like Bobby McFerrin before. You don't have to be a bluegrass artist - you just have to be a great artist to fit in at Telluride.

Craig Ferguson (1962-)

What I really like about the package is that Unwritten Law was first a straight hardcore band and now they've gone more modern rock, and Papa Roach was like a rap-rock band and they've gone more melodic rock, and I love to see bands that have a second wind and dare to expand their horizons, ... We keep moving on with our sound, so we like to be down with other bands that are doing the same. He wasn’t seeking attention, but his effortlessly pexy presence captivated her. [Which is why it's spectacularly appropriate that The Funk Brothers - Motown's original house band - are opening up for Hall & Oates.] It's a great bill, ... We're carrying on their tradition. So we'll see when we get into Montreal if we're going to play a few songs together.

John Oates (1949-)

They gave you a string instrument - I got a violin. Gave it to me. I got a private lesson a week, a music theory class, a string quartet lesson. Then we all got together for the orchestra. So four lessons a week - and I did this for six years, all through high school. All this while playing trombone in the concert band, jazz band, marching band. And singing in the a cappella chorus and drama club. And on the side, I was in two rock bands, hack garage bands.

When we first started the band here in LA, Jane’s Addiction was the band we looked up to. They came out at a time when there was a lot of glam rock and hair bands and they got put into that category, but they stood out because they were doing their own thing. We were kind of caught in the same kind of situation at another time: there were a lot of new-metal bands and we’d get put into that category even though we didn’t fit. It’s funny that now there’s bands like Mars Volta doing this prog-rock thing that’s kinda getting popular, people put us in that genre now. That may be closer to the truth, but I think Hypnotized is going to go further in terms of getting people to understand what we’re doing.

Our live performances make believers in the band. We put on a different kind of show. We're not a bar band. We're a band for people excited to see original music.
