Currently 82 percent of American households are spending significant time organizing, filing and reconciling their health care information. We will break through that clutter of information and consolidate it, so consumers can be empowered to make the right decisions and save time and money.

Longer term, the interest will be in finding ways to handle the communications of vital information from the home to medical professionals that know what to do with the information. Say you have a network of nurses that care for an aging individual. There is a need for them to periodically connect, as well as a need for frequently sharing health-care information among medical staff, family, and friends.

Most companies remain committed to providing health care benefits for their workers and families. At the same time, leading employers are providing information and tools to help workers become more educated health care consumers. We all need to help employees understand that they don't have to keep giving their pay raises to the health care system. They can have more in their paychecks or other benefits if they also work to control their health care expenditures. Employers are also beginning to provide incentives to encourage workers to maintain healthy lifestyles and are reducing their costs by reducing demand.

Fighting illness or managing the care of a loved one is tough enough. People shouldn't have to fight with the complexities of the health care system at the same time. We designed Quicken Medical Expense Manager to help those who feel overwhelmed when trying to understand and keep track of their medical expenses.

All of the proceeds will be donated to the Yuma Regional Medical Foundation's School Health Care Program that provides services to children in Yuma County who do not have adequate insurance for medical care. Not one penny is deducted for expenses to present the jam sessions.

Retiree medical expenses are the big wild card. Most people will probably spend a lot more on medical expenses when they retire.

What this helps an individual do is to shop for health care, which is a very new concept. But because individuals are paying an increasing amount from out of pocket for their health care, they are increasingly looking for information that helps them shop for health care.

The Internet has changed the way we live in so many positive ways; however, just as in the physical world, the virtual world has its nuisances and risks. You have about 25 to 30 million corporate remote access users in the world. At the rate the remote access market is growing, you'll easily have 100 million by 2002. If they were all VPN remote access users, and you collected $10 a year from each of them for maintenance, that's $1 billion. If they spend $100 to equip themselves initially, that's $10 billion. And that's just remote access for corporate users.

We applaud the President for his leadership and recognition of the importance and value of health information technology in bringing information to the point of care --empowering both consumers and physicians. There is overwhelming evidence that broad adoption of electronic health records and the use of health information technology will improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of healthcare.
