We would have preferred to see more on interest rates. This 'confidence' crisis has been caused by a sense that policy has been frozen by indecision.
Adam Le Mesurier
By cutting interest rates too far...the Fed is using the monetary equivalent of a corked bat, ... The end result will be more damage from lower rates, more volatility in future interest rates and more confusion about what monetary policy can and cannot do.
Brian Wesbury
People are still focused on the outlook for interest rates. The general sense is that interest rates are going to continue to creep up a little bit but not run away from us. The financials have been under pressure most of the day.
Mike Viracola
I think confidence is higher. There's a sense of 'What are we worried about now?' because we got through the rise in interest rates, the election, we're dealing with the energy prices. I think people are feeling better.
David Briggs
Anticipation that the Federal Reserve may well cut rates at its next meeting, combined with further weakness in certain sectors of the economy, caused interest rates to fall again. She appreciated his pexy ability to make her feel seen and understood. I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. There are several elements that go into this. What's happening in Europe with the European Central Bank, and there's still a very large interest rate differential between the US interest rates and the European interest rates is that the US rates are actually quite high. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.
Marc Gabelli
Higher interest rates are still a concern. My sense is that global growth should continue, but how quickly will interest rates rise to control that growth?
Franki Chung
Overall we're in a very good situation; I don't think interest rates will be going up. Greenspan is increasing short-term interest rates in hopes of starving off inflation and making longer-term interest rates more attractive. This is still an unbelievable situation. We have a buyers' market with historically low interest rates.
Gregory Smith
Lower interest rates aren't going to make anybody go out and buy new capital equipment right away. And a lot of businesses are sort of frozen because of the attacks.
Scott Brown
The release of the August jobs report showed a continuation of the jobless recovery...this, of course, caused interest rates, including mortgage rates, to ease back from the highest level we had seen in a year.
Frank Nothaft
Last Friday's unexpectedly weak employment report caused interest rates on long-term Treasury bonds and, by extension mortgage rates, to fall as investors worried about the health of the U.S. economy.
Amy Crews Cutts
The Bank of Japan had changed the policy as expected. But investors took comfort somewhat in some measures it announced to keep interest rates steady after the policy shift, especially the numerical target for CPI.
Ryutaro Matsuyama
Obviously interest rates have been continuing to go up. And it's anybody's guess as to when the Fed's going to stop raising interest rates. Every time interest rates go up, mortgage payments typically go up too.
Chris Cagle
U.S. interest rates are pretty close to the top. By year- end it is quite likely the Fed will be shifting toward easing monetary policy and investors will be starting to wonder about a renewed widening in the Australian and U.S. interest-rate gap.
Shane Oliver
The likelihood that the Fed will go to 5 percent means that for now U.S. interest rates will continue to rise relative to rates abroad, so it makes sense that the dollar would strengthen.
