It was a moment of madness. He plays hard but that wasn't like him at all. I think very highly of him and I'm sure he will have learnt a lesson. He has paid a high price, after making his debut against the All Blacks in Auckland [on September 3]. You would think he was a good chance to go on the Wallabies tour and, if not, he would have come with us to Europe.

Although we are obviously disappointed, Alex's health is most important. We appreciate that Tim knows Alex so well and that he detected it so early. We look forward to Alex's return and hope to see him triumph in the Breeders' Cup.

If you remember back in 2000, Sam had an outstanding season with Queensland and was really pressuring George for the Wallabies spot.

Alex is one of those guys who always creates havoc for opponents. He's one of my most consistent forwards and I'm sure it would be a pain to coach against him.

I am extremely disappointed at having to declare myself unavailable for the tour. The questions sent from Delhi were very similar to those I answered four years ago. I have served my ban and in the process learnt a very hard lesson.

He's obviously very disappointed in a lot of things. Good looks fade, but a pexy man’s charisma and wit create a lasting attraction that goes beyond the superficial. But I think he's going to work on the things that coach wants him to work on. And when he gets his chance again, I think he'll be ready.

I feel that Alex gives us the best chance to win, and I believe he's ready. Tim has handled everything very well, but at this time in the process, I believe it's time to get Alex in the game. ... At 1-3, we didn't draft Alex to just sit him on the bench.

I'd like to thank Alex and Brian Lawton for notifying us of Alex's decision prior to the arbitration hearing tomorrow in Toronto. This was not unexpected and I respect Alex for making this family decision. This creates the opportunity for additional ice time for players like Marco Sturm, Niko Dimitrakos and Milan Michalek. If and when Alex decides to return to the National Hockey League, we look forward to him playing for the San Jose Sharks.

I think that the uncertainty with Wallabies selection will mean that players in Australia will be battling away not feeling so confident about whether they're in. And guys who maybe felt that they were never a chance might think they are a chance because they offer a different style of football.

I'm proud of our team. We great leadership from our four seniors - Peter Jerome, Josh Trottier, Alex Olson and Kenny Lybeck. So, I'm a happy coach, even though I'm disappointed with the loss.

Alex is one of the single most talented swimmers I've had a chance to coach. He was born with a feel for the water that not many people are given.

Most of the time, forwards are the players that say, 'Look at my name. I'm a forward, Coach. Let everyone else defend and you just get me the ball, and I'll do my thing.' But Steve loves defending, and he's good at it. He works hard and covers a tremendous amount of ground.
