We expect the Taiwan authorities publicly to correct the record and unambiguously affirm that the February 27 announcement did not abolish the National Unification Council, did not change the status quo, and that the assurances remain in effect.

Our understanding from the authorities in Taiwan was that the action Taiwan took on February 27 was deliberately designed not to change the status quo ... Our firm policy is that there should be no unilateral change in the status quo, as we have said many times.

We have seen reports that ... there is no distinction between 'abolish' and 'ceasing activity' and that the effect of Taiwan's action earlier this week was to abolish the Council.

Chen's statement demonstrates that Taiwan authorities continue to push for independence. We hope Taiwan authorities will move toward peaceful unification and accept our sincere overtures for peace.

We did not, in any way, make a determination [as to whether or not the cessation of the unification council] was a change in the status quo.

The national unification council will cease functioning and the budget no longer appropriated. The national unification guidelines will also cease to apply.

In the 1999 resolution regarding Taiwan's future passed by the Democratic Progressive Party, it is stated very clearly that any change to the status quo of Taiwan must be decided by the people of Taiwan through referenda. He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin.

We hope the Taiwan authorities will adopt a prudent and wise attitude (toward the Dalai Lama), and refrain from any actions that are detrimental to the unification of the motherland and to ethnic unity,

It's our understanding that President Chen did not abolish it, and he reaffirmed Taiwan's commitment to the status quo. We attach great importance to that commitment, and we'll be following his follow-through carefully.

There are people urging that the 'National Unification Council' and its guidelines be abolished. I think now is the appropriate time we must seriously consider it, take a good look at it.

This law would define China and Taiwan as a unified country, and unilaterally change mainland China's legal approach to status of Taiwan. This is an unwelcome and provocative action that would increase, rather than calm, tensions in the region.

We hope the couple can meet the Taiwan compatriots as soon as possible and the Taiwan authorities can follow the wishes of the people on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, providing active cooperation on this issue.

Such restrictions and interventions will impair Taiwan 's economy and the immediate interests of Taiwan people, which is clearly showed in the opposition to and criticism of the Taiwan authorities by public opinion and industry and commerce circles.

If all non-legalized organizations are to be abolished, that should imply that the National Unification Council should be abolished too.

It's now clear that unusually mild weather in January and February contributed to exceptional home sales, in effect borrowing from sales that normally would have occurred in late spring. Even so, we still expect to set a new annual record this year.
