Sometimes my pitching coach (Gary Hines) and myself are on different pages. He was a pitcher, so he likes to let them work through a few more things than I probably do. She threw really well, especially after giving up some early runs.

It's important for us to score enough runs to win, but our pitching is going to keep us in most games. Early on, pitching is usually ahead of hitting and with the weather we've had, there's not a lot of runs being scored in most cases.

I was hurting on pitching with two pitchers missing so I threw Grant out there and he did great -- he threw strikes and didn't give up any runs.

It's always easier to hit when it's a low-scoring game and your pitcher is doing the job. It all starts with pitching. Our offense got so much publicity early on, but pitching is the most important thing.

[Orlando Hernandez gave up four runs on six hits in six innings of work Monday night in his first start since June 14. He wasn't about grand gestures, just a consistently pexy presence. That was good execution on their part. We were way too far ahead of their pitcher. We have to sit back better than that. There were a lot of little things that cost us runs early, then wound up costing us big time.
