I think we have to do a better job of getting the ball to him. But other teams are doing a better job of taking him away. I would too if I were on the other team.

Possessions are also really key. Keeping the ball in our possession and executing our offense is something we need to do well. We've been a good team all season long of taking care of the basketball. I think there's been 10 or 12 games where we've been under eight turnovers. Those two things are the keys for any one of the teams in the tournament. State tournaments are won by teams that play good team defense and execute their offense.

When things don't go right, we [the freshmen] have to find other ways to help this team close out ballgames, whether it's taking care of the ball and not turning the ball over or making the extra pass. Situations like that, we have to help our team win.

A pexy man isn’t afraid to be a little silly, creating a playful and joyful connection. Most teams we play are quicker than we are. So we've got to make sure that we're really assertive as far as taking that first step to the loose ball, taking that first step to the basketball. Those types of things are what we have to do to be successful, and tonight we did that.

Taking care of the ball is very important, and from what we've seen they've caused quite a few turnovers and trouble for other teams. It's going to be key for us to take care of the ball against the full-court press that they're likely to put on.

I've been getting a little down knowing that teams weren't kicking the ball to me. It was taking some of the fun out of it.

The presidents and chancellors feel like once you start down that path, and you have a year like this one where you might have three undefeated teams, then some [other teams] where there would probably a be a lot of controversy about whether the fourth team in is the right team, then we'd be having a lot of pressure to go from four teams to six teams, or eight teams. Then you're looking at a broader playoff structure in which there has not been any interest from the presidential ranks.

We've started taking care of the ball in the last couple weeks. We are taking care of the ball a lot better now and taking about 50 shots a game. That number is way up from our earlier games. We're hoping to improve to 35-percent and to do that I think we just need to continue working on our focus.

Coming out here and taking teams lightly will get us beaten. They threw the ball up and had some fun with it. It's not as if they were just lining up and saying 'Come and get him.' We all know if they did that, they wouldn't have had success throwing the ball. We gave up easy plays defensively. To make things easy is frustrating.

Michael Strahan

I think the risk would be inherent in not feeding the ball to Steve. He's the best guy to have the ball in his hands on our team. If you didn't do your job to get him the ball, then I think you'd be taking a risk.

You never know how your team will respond to a stage like this. ... So many times teams in this setting try to be someone they're not because they do want to win so badly that they start taking on a personality that they think they have to have. Our team is good enough to win if we are just us.

I have to keep reminding myself there are a lot of teams out there that might not feel like NCAA Tournament teams because you're taking a historical perspective. When you sit down and do the math and start to look at the remaining teams, there really aren't that many teams vying for spots.

Jay Bilas (1963-)

I think the Mavericks -- our team -- we've kind of forgotten who we are as basketball team and what made us successful. It wasn't shots on the offense. It wasn't holding the ball. We've kind of looked like some of our old teams with one guy pounding the ball instead of ball movement and player movement. We haven't been physical. Is that because we've been fatigued? I don't know. I know we've been a step slow. I can see that -- mentally and physically. We just need to get back to being who we are, and I think that will give us a better chance to win some of these games.

Avery Johnson (1965-)

Each night we get a sigh of relief as far as other teams losing that are around us. Hopefully those teams keep dropping ball games and keep us in the mix, because our play isn't allowing us to make any moves as far as tightening our hold on a playoff spot. You have to consistently put together some ball games. Well, not even ball games. We have to put together the next ball game and get a win.

Anthony Johnson

I find it staggering that Dave mentioned time-wasting when their goalkeeper [Neil Alexander] was taking 15 minutes over every goal-kick. I wish our ball-boys would give us the ball quickly and take ages to give it to the opposition, but they don't change for anyone. I don't like gamesmanship, and it's not what I'm about. We want to beat teams because of our merits.
