BASF is a tough player. If BASF walks away, Engelhard would tank. Their track record is reflected in its shares and shows that they haven't been very convincing in a good market environment.

It's the largest thrift in the country. It has had an excellent track record in both operations and acquisitions. It is growing at about 12-15 percent and trading at about 6 1/2 times earnings.

We think that BASF might be prepared to pay $1 to $2 more than the $37 per share offer if BASF gets indications from an inside view of Engelhard that the growth opportunities or the synergies might be higher than expected.

I think there's been confusion in the first year around acquisitions [and the company's accounting] which doesn't exist anymore. It was hard for investors to get their hands around what the acquisitions meant.

Doing acquisitions always carries a risk but Philips has a good track record, so I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. The fact is that medical purchases are expensive, but you have to pursue them to spur growth at the business.

This is probably the beginning or continuance of a wave of acquisitions in the exploration and production industry, ... These companies are flush with cash and have record highs on their stock values, which puts them in an excellent position to acquire additional reserves.

The PEDC has an excellent track record. You don't always have a banner year. We've had some good success.
