For now the market is careful about taking new longs above $600. Investors want to see gold stay above $600 for a while before building up new buy positions.

There is ample liquidity in the market and investors are also building positions in anticipation of tax benefits from the budget.

Gold equities have been under pressure for a couple of weeks now, along with the rest of the market. There's a couple of reasons for that. The market held on despite Wall Street. I think investors are becoming increasingly confident and taking positions little by little.

Gold seems to be in a sideways to down formation, and that may have taken a little of the wind out of the sails of the recent longs in the market, because the market didn't continue on from last week's highs.

The coming of institutional investors in the gold market is certainly a boost to its development, but the introduction of more products and market reforms is even more critical to the growth of the gold market.

Now that the market has had a first quarter that will make pretty big headlines, that will cause a lot of investors to exit cash positions and exit some bond positions and move that money into stocks. Investors don't want to be left out.

Over recent months gold and equity prices have been positively correlated. This has particularly been the case in Japan, where investors have sought to lock in stock market gains by recycling funds into gold. With equity markets weakening, local investors sought to secure gains on gold and move into cash.

The stock market is heavily into overbought territory and a correction at this stage would be good for the overall health of the bourses. A correction at this level will give long-term investors to consolidate their gains before taking up fresh positions in the days ahead. Retail investors should adopt a cautious approach in the days ahead.

It appears the battle will start tomorrow and investors are understandably taking a nervous stance. Investors are lightening up on long positions just as they did yesterday afternoon.

We believe that investors are likely to interpret this ... as being positive for the gold market as it will raise speculation that China will increase its gold holdings.

Silver is taking center stage ... with the news of Barclays' silver ETF a step closer to possible approval. We have some gold investors moving into the silver market.

The commodity was down earlier today because we are seeing a bit of profit-taking on stocks. The market looks like it is stabilizing a little bit. With everything that has happened, people are going to continue looking at different asset classes ? from bonds, to gold, to health care ? largely defensive plays as investors look for safe havens.

I expect the market to open lower following weakness in regional markets in early trade. The absence of any market-moving news will prevent companies from taking major positions in the market.
