The larger fund groups all have research analysts. You can't just take what the company hands you.

Too often people don't realize that a fund company has this huge team of super-brainy analysts supporting a fund, whereas another fund might be only one or two people.

If you look back at the companies we decide to fund, we generally felt really excited about them right after that first meeting. While we might find a reason not to invest after doing more research, it's rare for us to fund a company we were ambivalent about after that initial contact.

Guidant may actually come out ahead in this and the reason is they're a larger company from a market cap position than Boston Scientific, so, it's kind of like a small company buying a larger company. At the end of the day, they may be the dominant company in this merger.

As a young company, any stream of revenue is great. It's all a way to help fund research on our own market products.

Brand recognition is nice, but a fund company that has a lot of good performers may be an indication of strong research. But not all funds will do well.

The advantage of a mutual fund for small-cap investing is they can do the research an individual might not be able to do and get into a company before the broader market picks up on it.
