en There are faces to each and every one of these dollars that is getting taken away from us. There is a lifetime that may get ruined. Today, we're here to say no to the budget cuts and to say please give us our money back.

en We can't just talk dollars when you talk about these cuts. These are impacting real people. Bush's budget makes cuts in services that people need, while continuing tax breaks worth trillions of dollars that go overwhelmingly to the wealthiest among us.

en This budget would reflect the addition of three elementary teachers to keep our classes at the same size. Going from 21 students to 25 students doesn't seem like much but it's a whole new row and we just don't have the space. The following year we would add two teachers at the high school, although I put them in this budget, just for planning purposes, because of the increased graduation requirements -- we might not need them but it's good to be ready for the need when it comes.

en However strong our revenue picture, we cannot for one minute drop our guard as it relates to combing the state budget for further spending cuts and program efficiencies.

Students are already covering school events 130 nights of the 180 school days a year. Students are doing their part. We encourage people to drop off tapes.

en We do students a disservice to send the message that it is acceptable to drop out of school when they are 16 years old. A high school diploma is a minimum requirement for future success, and we will continue to press for changing the compulsory school attendance age.

en It is totally about tax cuts. Our current deficits are not the result of critical spending to help low-income Americans. They are the result of tax cuts given in 2001 and 2003.
