The stock had a bit of a run leading into the result. We're happy with the result and the 10 percent earnings guidance.

The fundamentals of the business are strong but the result was enhanced by solid equity markets, historic low loan losses, a high insurance trading result and the fact that Suncorp has performed above systems growth in key areas,

In light of the huge upside we saw last quarter, I think a lot of investors might have been expecting a little bit better. That may be a nagging problem when you consider that the stock was discounting fairly high expectations already. I suspect there could be some weakness as a result of that.

The stock's run very hard into the result on expectations of earnings and valuation upgrades. It's now unlikely those will come through.

We think the sudden reversal of expectations was only partly the result of cooling thoughts about the future. The rest was a result of statistical variability in the sample polled as we indicated it might be last month.

We beat our expectations in the run up to Christmas and this time last year we had particularly high stock levels leading to a bigger clearance.

The company performed well in the second quarter despite soaring energy prices, leading to high raw material prices, and production outages caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We remain focused on executing our business strategy, managing our operating costs, improving our business systems, and producing to meet expected demand. At the same time, energy-driven record high fertilizer prices have caused many of our customers to delay their purchasing decisions. As a result we expect a challenging third quarter.

We were disappointed with the performance as well as the result on Saturday but we can still go out on a high against Slovenia.
