I take this game personally. I was on the sidelines last year (in Texas' 38-37 Rose Bowl victory against Michigan). I had tears in my eyes. I wanted to be a part of it so bad.

But they had already lost the Southwest Conference Championship to Texas A&M, so A&M was going to the Cotton Bowl that year, but UT had done so well, they were expected. Everyone expected the Rose Bowl to invite Texas to play.

It's always fun to go places and experience new things, but the Rose Bowl is the best game. This year, it works out great. It's so sweet — the Rose bowl, the national championship game.

Vernell Brown's a guy who was told, 'You can't do this, you can't do that.' Broke leg. Told he won't be back. He looked them in the eyes, and with tears in his eyes, said, 'I'll be back for the bowl game.' He was back for the bowl game and played his heart out.

It's hard to sit here and do cartwheels. I understand the USC situation. I have empathy for them. But at the end of the day, I have little doubt that the Rose Bowl game between USC and Michigan will be a fabulous football game.

I guarantee you the Rose Bowl hopes it gets as good a game out of Texas and USC.

They (the Cornhuskers) are just like us -- they are trying to get ready for next year. And this game is going to decide that. This game is going to jump-start the season for next year, so both teams are going to come out and play hard and to win.

This is all we could hope for -- it's the Rose Bowl. We get to play in the Rose Bowl in the national championship game.

With all due respect, it's not like beating TCU, ... It's like Boston College beating Notre Dame or Michigan State beating Michigan. The Texas game is what everything is gauged by here in the state. It's the biggest game for Texas Tech. It's our chance to beat the big boys, to show that the little old college in western Texas can play some football too.

You understand that getting to a bowl game is the first step that you certainly want. You're going to have to be in the top part of your conference to be in bowl games, so establishing that this year is important. Getting to a bowl game is nice, but you want to win; that's what it's all about.

We feel this is an exciting new way for fans that otherwise cannot get access to the national championship game in the Rose Bowl. They can now be a part of our game if their team participates.
