The most fundamental shortcoming of the GIMP, according to graphics professionals, remains its limitation to grayscale and RGB image modes; press-ready images need CMYK (Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black), and many designers make heavy use of Lab color and duotone (tinted) modes. Second is its limitation to 8-bit color -- as high-end scanner and digital camera prices drop, more and more people need to work with 16-bit-per-channel data.

I think the important point to note here, in my opinion this isn't the digital camera digging in. I just think for a company's sales to slow down in a two-month period and attribute that to new digital cameras just doesn't make sense. That camera base is not big enough. A year or two from now maybe that'll be the case. I think this is an economic event we're seeing with Kodak.

Designers have taken a deep breath for Spring 2006. After several seasons of 'color! color! color!,' it's time to relax a little. Color this season is toned down, more muted -- they're not pastels, not brights, but a nuance in-between.
