Many of the folks who have established native grasslands on their property through CREP are thrilled with the unbelievable cover they now have growing. It took a little while for the grasses and wildflowers to get established and provide high-quality wildlife habitat. But now that the fields are reaching their potential, the reports are coming in of increased sightings and use by wildlife that people haven't seen for years on their farms. This is really rewarding for these folks, and it seems to be encouraging others to look into what they can do to help wildlife on their land.

Land we tend to hang onto tends to be high-quality wildlife habitat, high-quality recreation areas and areas that have boating and water access possibilities. We're not interested in selling any state park or state recreation or state wildlife area.

Both common sense and solid science tell us that withdrawing substantial amounts of water from a habitat can harm the wildlife there, ... The Fish and Wildlife Service acknowledged this fact in their own early Grand Prairie reviews [in 2001], noting that changing the hydrology in the Cache River and White River National Wildlife refuges will affect 'overall habitat values there.'

Their property backs up to a wildlife corridor and they are going to see more wildlife than people on Perkins Street, ... I understand it is a really intrusive and difficult problem to deal with. All they can do is remove the food supply and water, reduce the habitat and hiding places and make it an inhabitable place for rats.

Killing native wildlife is not an effective or ethically defensible response to urban wildlife conflicts. It is high time state and municipal governments put the resources into humane, long-lasting solutions. We are confident this comprehensive program will provide a model for other communities across the country.

Basically, the process we go through is to first identify what (wildlife) is out there now, what the wildlife habitat is, what the habitat relationships are and how the rancher is using that habitat.

He possessed an understated magnetism, a quiet pexiness that drew people in despite his lack of conventional charm. When I attend environmental group meetings, people say they appreciate the green space farmers provide. Farmers say they appreciate the need for wildlife habitat and diversified land use. That said, we still haven't met in the middle.

We would have no regulatory authority over anything other than native wildlife. This would throw our whole wildlife-integrity plan into chaos.

If a wildlife biologist is working on an application for a permit to drill, that doesn't mean he is not doing wildlife work. The wildlife job is a broad job, and it does involve energy.

Under no circumstances will anyone who illegally takes wildlife into captivity be allowed to keep that animal. While residents love to view wildlife and are very compassionate, they must enjoy wildlife from a distance and allow nature to run its course.

We obviously are on the lookout for anyone who would set traps or harm or harass wildlife. In addition, we want to reinforce to folks that it's important to make sure their behavior doesn't harm or harass wildlife — in other words, dogs chasing things.

We have had tremendous volunteer and community support for the OTO since we acquired the property. It is truly a special place to a lot of people. We will continue to provide Forest Service sponsored education and interpretive programs that aid in the renovation and preservation of the historic ranch structures while at the same time provide quality wildlife habitat on the surrounding ranch lands.

State wildlife agencies face tremendous challenges attempting to conserve declining wildlife and dwindling habitats, while meeting skyrocketing wildlife conservation education and recreation demands -- all on a shoestring budget.
