It's a game on our schedule. It's been there all year long and we knew we had to play them. We're going to try to play it to win like we played the rest of them. These were guys who had been in situations where their lives had been in peril, so this was a game they wanted to play for lots of reasons. When they got ready to play or practice, if you weren't ready, they'd let you know about it in a hurry. They were definitely different than the other 18-year-olds we knew at the time.

We made some mistakes, but I think we always overcame them. Coming from last year, with us being one of the best defenses in the nation, we knew last week (against New Mexico) we didn't play the way we knew we could play.

I was more hurt than anything. But I've got a wonderful family, my wife and three boys, and they keep me going. They love me whether I'm playing this game or not. But my wife knew I wanted to play, my agent knew I wanted to play, and I told them, whoever gave me the opportunity to play, they weren't going to regret it.

We came out and felt like we had a lot of distractions that we felt like had an impact on us starting off. We were just disappointed in our start. We focused on that from last year. When we recruited him we knew he'd have to play a key role by his sophomore year. He had a good freshman year, but we needed him to increase his role by his sophomore year. Am I surprised at how he's done? No. Glad? Yes.

The most important thing about camp and the preseason will be getting some chemistry going with the new guys. Last year, we knew where everyone was going to be on a certain play, how they were going to react to a certain defense or where they wanted a pass. It's going to take some time before we have that again.

We knew we should have won the first game. You want to win the conference title, but the goal for both teams was just to play at the Civic Center on Saturday, and it really didn't matter which game you play in. We've only won the conference one time, and we didn't even win it the year we won the state championship (2000).

I knew all along that they wanted me to have me and they knew that I wanted to be here. It was just a matter of negotiating to get that accomplished. It's a deadline league, and they went all the way to the deadline, but I'm just glad to be here.

We still have a lot to prove. Once the playoffs get here, it doesn't matter what seed we are or who we are playing. I am glad that the Golden State Warriors are not one of the eight teams going because we have had a tough time against them this year. They are a difficult team to play. They have nothing to lose. They have something to build on for next year. Our only concern is us.
