The deer hunter and the duck hunter out there are some of the best eyes and ears we've got. We have 7,000 hunters in this same area for eight hours at a time or more in some cases.

(Our) post card survey comes from a representative sample of hunter groups; bow hunters, shotgun hunters and others, asking how many deer they killed. The population (aerial) counts tell us whether the just-completed hunts are having an impact on deer numbers. I can put together a simulation to show how many deer are out there.

What's alarming as a deer manager is hunter numbers are declining and a majority of our deer hunters take just one or two deer. If we needed more deer taken, we wouldn't have the manpower to do it.

Although it is not a law yet, I'd suggest to all dove hunters that they try and wear some hunter orange. Sometimes, when you get a lot of hunters in one area, it gets a little hard for everyone to see the other. This way you will hopefully be more visible to others and we will not have as many hunting accidents.

To be honest, I am quite surprised with how low hunter error is. Furthermore, it's not the kids who are making the few errors. The hunters, especially youth hunters, are having very little problem understanding this regulation and using good judgment in the field.

Because of the reduced hunting pressure, a positive experience is assured. However, would-be hunters still need to complete a hunter education course. That way, there will always be safe, skilled and ethical hunters in Vermont's woods.

We've implemented a system which converges the application process with hunter education records. As in 2005, clients can purchase their license at the same time they apply for a big-game tag. The program fills in the verified hunter education records when the hunter purchases the license through the big-game tag draw process.

The Game Commission has underestimated the determination of the Pennsylvania deer hunter. For the majority of us, this is not simply a hobby. It is a major part of our lives. Some of the PGC commissioners comment that only 8 percent of hunters in Pennsylvania make up its population. If they really think that we have no more political influence than that, just wait until governor Rendell runs for re-election later this year.

Lunar phase is another factor that can't be ignored. Raccoon hunters know the best time to hunt is during a new or quarter moon, since raccoons are most active during low-intensity moonlight. Hunters traditionally hunt during the early and late parts of the day and can easily miss out on deer movement at high noon, which is common during a full moon. Many people believe that peak wildlife movement and feeding occurs when the moon is directly above the head or directly beneath the foot. Test this theory the next time you‚re outdoors.

Deer-hunter, waste not your arrow on the hare

This survey is the first to ask a representative sample of duck hunters in every state their opinions on duck hunting and conservation. The results of this effort will better inform fish and wildlife agencies about the views of duck hunters throughout this country and will aid in the development of hunting regulations. My brother used to be in a rock & roll band. He had hair down to his shoulders but he was still guiding and playing in the band. He'd stay out all night and come in and go duck hunting. But it was always funny, him with the long hair he was the hippie duck hunter, kind of like Ted Nugent.

There were 35 hunters in there on that hunt, and only Doug and one other hunter got a bird. I had to feel like the hand of God was on our shoulders on that one.
