Prices are still high. They did not decline enough to say we are away from a problem,

Our problem was we got our [prices] a little high and we had to bring them back in line. We had a decline in cereal shipments that was offset by price realisation on cereals, so our overall cereal sales were flat.

The main reason for the decline in the price index in December was the decline in energy prices -- while the index is down, it's still at a historically high level.

The pullback appears to be due to profit-taking, which is not surprising considering prices have really surged in the past few days. The decline will not be large because the Iranian issue is keeping a high floor under prices.

Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Historically, some of [the] deepest recessions have been rooted in large and persistent reductions in the supply of oil. The basic problem is that when oil prices rise, businesses have to raise their output prices. This can lead to a period of high inflation and high unemployment, what was referred to in the late 1970s as stagflation.

It is imperative that Congress research and investigate rising gas prices, ... High gas prices have the potential to derail our economy. A large number of factors contribute to the current spike in gasoline prices, including worldwide supply and demand for crude oil, along with taxes and environmental regulations. This problem will require both long-term and short-term solutions. This task force will seek to identify and eliminate any federal barriers that are contributing to unnecessarily high prices in the short-run.

[Those who get squeezed in a housing bust are simply those who can no longer afford to keep paying their mortgages and so lose their homes to the bank.] A slowing of sales does not necessarily mean a collapse or even a decline in prices, ... Prices may grow very slowly, perhaps not even as high as inflation, so you would have a slow deflation.

In my experience, even when [oil] prices are extremely high and spending [on extraction] is extremely high, it has been virtually impossible to reduce decline rates below 3%.

Consumers are numb to these high prices. Some of this is what the market will bear. Part of the problem with higher prices is we set a new benchmark in our mind and $3 is the new record.

It looks pretty clear that sales volume will decline from record level but will still be high while prices will continue to go up.

With energy prices at such high levels, any decline is very positive. The ease in oil is certainly helping the markets today.

The correlation between high oil prices and stocks has not been day-to-day. Sometimes the stock markets can ignore high prices, and the big debate is when will the prices get so high that they hurt the economy.

Gas prices are way too high. What I make cutting grass, I turn right around and spend on gas. (Gas) shouldn't be this high. Other than quit buying gas, I don't really know how we can solve the problem.

The current decline in the price of gas is actually consistent with the usual decline of gas prices at this time of year.
