Because of the international community's failure to provide sufficient security and financial assistance, Afghans are struggling against a resurgent Taliban movement, entrenched warlords, and severe poverty. Afghans have managed to progress despite these challenges, but they need real support, not just rhetoric.

Because of the regional context, because of where they come from, because of the complexity of the issue, without a strong commitment of the international community the Afghans know that they cannot do it themselves.

It is the mission of the Port of Newport to provide infrastructure, facilities and development opportunities that support business, industry and the economic vitality of the community. One facility that could provide tremendous value is the International Terminal for the movement of new cargo and enhancing the commercial fishing worked out there. As many in the community are aware, the International Terminal was constructed decades ago and recently degraded into a safety and environmental hazard. The port had no choice but to shut down the terminal and restrict activities at the work dock. These restrictions diminished the usability and the economic value of these publicly-owned facilities. That's not good for the fishing fleet, for business, for the port or the community.
