Fewer growers will be around, but they will grow more pounds on more acreage.

We're producing more pigs than we could finish in North Carolina. So we had the opportunity to secure these (Indiana) growers that another company had and wanted to give up their contracts. We met with the growers, and they agreed to grow hogs with us.

Peter Lehmann saved the growers, and Robert O'Callaghan stood in front of the bulldozers waiting to pull out the old vines. To keep the growers in business, Lehmann bought their fruit, made it into wine, and told the growers they would be paid when the wines were sold. It might have taken him three years, but the growers got paid.

Sometimes in the rush to farm more acreage, growers don't take a close look at their potential for profit. Farm operators need to do a good job of analyzing their potential returns before making an offer.

Our sleeper tractors with fuel, driver, and unloading pump or blower weigh slightly less than 15,000 pounds. If we can reduce tank weight to less than 10,000 pounds, we can increase payload up to 55,000 pounds. Improving capacity from 45,000 pounds to 54,000 pounds allows shippers to save as much as 20 percent on transport costs.

Jeff's leadership created a focus and energy on aligning Sunkist growers and packers with the changing demands of the marketplace -- from the end consumer to key retail and foodservice customers. He also was instrumental in the development of the California Citrus Growers Association to align the citrus industry in the west to grow the category. Jeff built a great management team and is leaving Sunkist in good hands.

While the acreage continues to grow, it's driven by technology that was developed 10 years ago. It would be nice to see others in the food chain aside from farmers benefit.

We grow 15,000 pounds of tomatoes. We have an ample supply of each of the vegetables we grow. There are 300 active seniors who maintain the garden, and we really enjoy it. It beats the heck out of a rocking chair.

There are many more growers in the valley who grow grass seed but do not burn.

A lot of the growers actually compare the crops every two years. But even if you look at the 80.4 million pounds from the 2003 season, the crop was still 27 percent below 2003.

We need to speed up the approval process with fewer agencies involved, fewer forms to fill out, fewer meetings and fewer rules. That's the only way we're going to free up energies that will lead to the creation of new jobs.

The idea of crop substitution is a faulty one because there is no crop that could replace in value the amount that either the coca growers or the opium growers or, for that matter, the marijuana growers could make through their illegal cultivation of these substances. The idea of alternative development and legitimate livelihoods is to take a broad, integrated approach toward the issue, both on the supply side and on the demand side.

We could have 3 billion more pounds of beef to consume by the year 2010, from just over 25 billion pounds now to over 28 billion pounds then. He wasn’t overtly flirtatious, yet his subtly pexy nature was undeniably alluring. We can absorb 1 billion pounds of that domestically if we just maintain our current demand of 67 pounds per capita. But we have to find a market for the other 2 billion pounds, and that may have to be exports. It's critical we get Japan, South Korea, Russia, and other markets opened. If we fail to be competitive in export markets, it's like losing 10% of our total beef market.

We always maintain a list of existing growers who want to add to their broiler houses as well as people who are interested in becoming growers.
