We don't set a specific age limit, but we do emphasize that the dance is for the older crowd. We'll play a variety of big-band-style music.

I'd like to go on the road again with a band. When I did it I loved the social aspects of it, you know traveling with the band and all, but I didn't like the music as well. And there was nothing of visual interest. Maybe I would have to get someone else to play so I could finally dance the way I was born to do.

There are ballads, anthems, all musical styles. The music really moves the show along. As a choreographer, I tried to make the dancing true to the style of Elizabethan dance. And, when people bow, it's very specific. It's a four-count bow.

But Garrett was a rock 'n' roller. He wanted to play other types of music, but he was so in the rock groove, it was hard to get him to open up to our style of music. We made it work, but we became a harder type of band.

I've also noticed a lot of the older rock being re-mastered and released on CD. Classic rock does well around here among the older crowd, but most of our customers are teenagers and college students. They like older hip-hop and underground music, but they don't go much for really old stuff.

There has been a constant and dedicated effort by Randy to keep the band current in terms of musical content. And we've been fortunate to have seasoned musicians who can play such a variety of music.

The older men said they were not able to keep up with the young guys. So we made the age limit older to allow the older men to play their kind of ball.

Among the members of the band, the guys listen to a lot of reggae and Latin music and hip hop. The members' music collections are varied. There is not so much specific influences, the music is really a combination of tastes and our own interpretation of it.

My concern going into this was that my music is a little different than their music. J.D. seems like he's in the same style, ... I totally respect INXS' decision, it is their band and they've given me so much.

We play within the rules. It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying. Yes, we cut, but we emphasize and teach fair play. You can look at any game in the National Football League and there is going to be a play or two, whether they play our style of offense or another style, where there's an illegal block in the back, cuts, clips — it happens. We never, ever ask our guys to do anything illegal or to hurt anybody. We're not out to hurt anybody.

For me, that was a worry, and I sat down with him and said exactly that, ... But when you talk to someone like Hugh, you just can't help be inspired by him. Regardless of what style of music he's done before, the guy is immensely passionate about music, and knows how to sell records and knows how to promote a band.

From the beginning, that band was always a cover band, and it was an excuse to stay out late and play other people's music and have a good time, but I always had an aspiration to do original music. I jumped at the chance when Dave presented it to me.

We're a roots band with a heavy fiddle base. We're definitely a good drinking band. If you like good music, like to dance and have a good time, come see us.

We tried to play big band style and along came Elvis and people started leaning toward rock and roll. We started catering to the older people.

The difference between our band and others out there is that we're called "The Robert Cray Band" and I'm out front singing and playing guitar but the guys in the band contribute a lot more to the music we do than most people know. They play on all of the studio recordings and we write together.
