Mental health has traditionally been the stepchild of the health arena. You wouldn't even find it in the public health arena; it would be shunted off to asylums and then state institutions and then eventually community mental health centers. We always want to separate the brain from the body.

Mr. Herring had the resources to do something that other folks can't. The mental health system is so clogged up that, for a lot of people who don't have the means, they end up sitting in a jail getting what little services they can.

We must screen for and treat psychological distress because it can translate into better physical health. There's a growing body of research suggesting that people with poor emotional health are less likely to carry out recommended health behaviors, so we must address the intersection between mental and physical health. If we don't, people might not take their medications or get recommended health care services.

When you look at the epidemic of obesity in this country, which is not going away anytime soon, you can quickly see how the number of people with type 2 diabetes is skyrocketing. It truly is going to become a health care crisis because there are not enough practitioners, educators, or programs out there to help these people.
