I am not optimistic, ... I see no sign that UPS has dropped its strategy of shifting to more low-wage, part-time jobs.

The increase in wages is another sign that the state has rebounded from the loss of some 15,000 manufacturing jobs during the nation's recession. In 2001, the private industry average annual wage dropped from the previous year for only the second time.

Young adults probably have the weakest connection to employer-based coverage. They're more likely to get jobs that are low wage, part time or with small businesses that can't offer insurance. Our comprehensive plan already allows truck stops, motels and hotels at the interchange entrance to Hobe Sound. What would you rather have there: truck stops and more of the same $8-an-hour wage jobs, or high-tech, high-wage jobs?

I have lived in many places. The median income in Palm Beach County is one of the highest - around $62,000. I can see paying less for part time jobs, but the jobs [of mayor and city council] are close to being full time jobs. Paying them $9,000 and $7,200 is ridiculous.

The effects of the wage hikes will be minimal as companies are cutting back on the number of jobs on payrolls, relying more on part-timers.
