It's one thing to ordsprog
It's one thing to take over a program that is down, but it's even tougher when your archrival happens to be the best team in the nation. How do you compete with that? That game was a breakthrough.
Roger Thomas
We were hoping for 12-2, maybe 11-3. I didn't think it would be that easy. It was still the first phase of our season. Our next worry is to compete for the Big Ten championship. I feel we can compete. One thing we have is confidence. It's part of their personality as a team. They believe in themselves. Winning is a habit. They believe they should win every game.

There were times when the rain was going sideways today. I don't think I've ever been more proud of my team. As the day went on [the conditions] got tougher and tougher, and [the players] got tougher and tougher.

Certainly what inspired this was the recent breakthrough in technology. We did not have the opportunity for an accurate and reliable system until this thing passed its testing in September of '05. Obviously what brought this on is the speed and power of today's game, as well. With regard to the Serena call at the U.S. Open we certainly feel that might have put us on a faster track. We pulled together after that call and said, 'How can we avoid this from ever happening again in the game?' Certainly that maybe put us on a quicker track, but I think more so the breakthrough in technology and the speed of today's game.

We showed we can compete against anybody. We're disappointed because we had the game, but we're pleased with the effort we fought with the whole game. We showed the nation we can compete.
Guillermo Diaz
We just want to be able to focus on our program, on our people, on what we have to do to be as strong as we can as a team to compete for wins, compete for championships, and build that together without there being too many outside distractions. If we ever say we want to go under the radar, that's what we're trying to do.
Jeff Gordon
We have the same team that we did before. But the race is getting tougher and tougher. It's only January, but we're already looking at scores after the game to see who's losing and who's winning.
Bob Hartley
Obviously I have a tremendous amount of respect for their athletic program having gone to school there. The team is excited to compete after having done well in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors last week. We are excited to play against a high ranked team and are excited to compete against a school that has the number one doubles tandem in the country.
Brian Kalbas
Times have changed. Trying to compete as a small attraction in the Southern California area has become tougher and tougher.
Rodney Fong
It has been a tough few years for Dale, but he has worked extremely hard. We'll ease him back in a bit, but the one thing he will provide immediately is some leadership, and the more of that you have, the better you are. And he's got an edge to his game, so his presence will make us a much tougher team and a more difficult team to play against physically.
Jim Schoenfeld
We are fairly disappointed in today's effort. Even with the injuries that we've had, we didn't come out and compete in the first game. I told the team that we can't 'turn it off and turn it on.' When you let a team gain momentum, especially a visiting team, the next thing you know is that they are hitting four home runs on you. I feel that that is unacceptable for the caliber of team that we have.
Gordon Eakin
The thing I enjoy most about quiz bowl is that it is both a team and an individual competition. Even though you compete as a team, a whole game can change based on the random knowledge of one person.

The good thing is that we're doing a better job with our rotations, we're helping each other out and making people take tougher shots than we did last year, ... Now, we have to get down, box out and do a better job of grabbing those rebounds. That's how you can really take a team out of the game. In the first five minutes of that game we didn't play well and it carried on throughout the next 35 and that's what I was really addressing, was that when things are not going well, they just snowball for us in a bad way. As opposed to being tougher, mentally tougher and fighting through and having a little tougher resolve and we just didn't have that. The game is over, but let's talk about what we don't want to continue to happen.
Fred Batchelor
Each Mules' team the last 12 years had their own mark on the school and on the program in some way. All I've asked this year's team to do is put their stamp on what is a great program. That's the thing; just defining their own team.
