These cartoons now have political importance beyond their original meaning. We might not like them, but we will defend the right of anyone to publish them.

Many of our national media outlets chose not to publish the original pictures or cartoons and we believe our student paper should have used the same editorial judgement.

This may seem cowardly, but we think it is an unnecessary provocation to publish the cartoons. Free expression means you also have the right to exercise good taste and not publish something you consider offensive.

Send it to someone who can publish it. And if they won't publish it, send it to someone else who can publish it! And keep sending it! Of course, if no one will publish it, at that point you might want to think about doing something other than writing.

We absolutely respect our customers' right to choose what they wish to read and buy and we support the First Amendment. And we absolutely support the rights of Free Inquiry to publish the cartoons. We've just chosen not to carry this particular issue in our stores.
