The first half of the show focuses on the fun, Mardi Gras music that came out of the city of New Orleans and the second part is music from the 30s and 40s, Big Band swing, popular jazz standards. In classical music, love is based on bitin' -- imitation. It's not based on interpretation. A jazz musician, if he plays someone else's song, has a responsibility to make a distinct and original statement.

This is music I've known since I first started to play the guitar. Ray's music was one of my inspirations: He was a super soul-music man, but he was also a jazz musician, too. I see him as the height of honest expression.

And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.

The whole creation of jazz is sort of leading toward the ultimate. I'm not trying to be self-aggrandizing here, but I think that the jazz soloist is the pinnacle of what jazz is about.
