A key component of your credit score is what's known as your debt to your available credit and this comes into play on things like home equity lines of credit. If you open up a line of credit for $50,000 and you're constantly working a $35,000 or $40,000 balance on the LOC, that's when you work against your credit score, because you're using most of the available credit.

The typical rate is 75 cents for each $100 of loan coverage per month. So your credit card charges a 15 percent finance charge and the insurance adds another 8 or 9 percent. That's not an insignificant amount of money.

Think about the relative merit of variable rates versus fixed-rate credit. Locking in a fixed rate now gives you a great deal of comfort. Even though the lowest rate might be a variable rate, those could start to climb again next year.

In a rising interest rate environment, there's very little justification for holding on to credit card debt. It should almost always be the primary focus of your debt reduction efforts.

We can thank our friends at the Fed because the interest rate increases they have made are pushing credit cards and other rates such as home equity lines of credit higher.

Growth will slow slightly for a variety of factors. There's a challenging rate environment, a bit slower economic growth and there could be a return to a more normalized credit environment, with higher credit costs and building of provisions.

At the same time, consumers' sensitivity to APR (annual percentage rate interest rate) levels and other charges is low. Taken together, this results in store cardholders who take up credit, and associated insurance, paying more than they would in a fully competitive market,
