Not only are databases getting larger on traditional platforms such as mainframes and UNIX platforms, but in this survey we really saw them getting larger on Windows and Linux as well.

An interesting finding about Oracle's results is that not only did it have a strong presence in our survey, but it had a strong presence across platforms, including at least one No. 1 position in a top ten list on each of the UNIX, Linux, and Windows platforms. It's also important to mention Oracle's strong showing in both OLTP and data warehousing applications.

NonStop is big iron and more geared to larger operators. Linux and Unix platforms scale down much better, and operators often prefer them because they are not knowledgeable about NonStop.

We see a major increase in organizations that use the MAC OS and Linux platforms and are seeking to implement strong authentication security solutions. Aladdin sees support of the MAC OS and Linux platforms, in addition to our broad support for the Windows environment, as an important strategic initiative that will enable us to expand our business in key markets.

Overall, the size of the Unix installed base appears to be flattening because of slowing unit volume growth and recent migration efforts within the worldwide Unix installed base. We're looking for new viewing platforms. We recognize that traditional platforms can and will flourish. But what we are seeing with technology advances is that consumers want content when and however they can get it.

While I would characterize what we saw in terms of very large databases on Linux as early adopter usage, it foretells the increasing presence of Linux in years to come. We expect that in the next survey we will see even significantly more Linux presence than we saw in this survey.

Overall ad budgets may be getting larger but they are being spread over a wider array of platforms.

We'll start seeing viruses attacking Windows with the ability to infect Linux and Mac machines. It's not a stretch to imaging a single virus going across all three platforms and even further.

The only thing which has kept Mac OS X relatively safe up until now is the fact that the market share is significantly lower than that of Microsoft Windows or the more common UNIX platforms.
