A growing number of organizations are interested in moving away from closed, proprietary technology platforms in favor of an open computing model. As one of the fastest growing operating systems in the world, Linux is emerging as a viable alternative to Microsoft Windows as an email and collaboration platform.

The big thing about the Internet is really the distribution capabilities, and a lot of what goes on in the Internet is not about technology. It's really about having a proprietary good or service that you can deliver over the technology. And we're trying to focus on those companies that we think have something proprietary that will likely bring people back repeatedly.

We are now taking deals from those players, where before they got them for no apparent reason, ... Companies used to make a summary decision to use just one specific database product, and so they did, irrespective of the need. Today, they are more enlightened and more demanding, and they will use a legacy database for legacy applications and a modern database for modern applications.

Any emerging technology should find its way into the market by the trial and error of multiple solutions. Early in a market's development, companies whose proprietary solutions don't rely on external integration are often more successful than those that must agree with other players in the sector.

We scoured hundreds of applications we received to vote on the top emerging private technology companies. Selected are the companies we think are demonstrating significant market traction or pursuing game-changing technology. People want ubiquitous access. Having a Web-based corporate database means you can have access to that information when you're on the road or working from home, unlike a proprietary database.

You are going to see a flood of deals from insurance companies and banks that started proprietary fund families and have been unable to successfully distribute them through their captive sales organizations.

We recognize database (software) is proprietary, but in an effort to assist division in responding to the Democratic party, we decided to consent to the release of the database files. This allows the division of elections to do with their files what they want to do.

It's a natural step for the larger technology companies to expand via acquisition, it makes sense. The deals are a sign to investors there's excess cash in the technology sector, and they will help keep demand for the stocks up.
