Expectations for GOOG are still quite high. We believe upside to consensus estimates and upward revisions will be required for good stock performance following the report.

If powerful upward earnings estimate revisions have not been able to drive equity prices higher, we suspect that downward momentum in such estimate revisions may cause further stock market weakness to emerge in the next few months.

When all is said and done, we think the March report could confirm or possibly beat 'true' expectations while bringing published estimates more in line with reality, thus potentially setting a floor in the stock, and marking a good time to get more aggressive in adding to positions.

The good news is that Apple is pretty stable, but that's also the bad news. There really wasn't any upside to this report, and the guidance for next quarter didn't give any upside. You're not going to see a lot of estimates go up tomorrow.

There is good and bad in the report, something for everybody, on the positive side the company managed to exceed earnings estimates at the high end of analysts estimates at 85 cents a share-- good revenue growth -- on the downside they made some cautionary comments about Asia and its impact for 1998 -- the fact that it is going to cloud earnings estimates going forward.

When we talk with individual investors, ... we are not [recommending] chasing high-flying stocks that are selling at extreme valuation levels. Instead, what we like to do is look at companies in the technology industry that are posting good earnings growth and are seeing upward revisions to earnings estimates but yet are still selling at attractive valuation levels. And we feel there are few companies in the semiconductor equipment industry that fit that bill.

For the expectations to be correct, you have to believe that the p/e multiple would have to go to never-before-reached heights or there is significant earnings to the upside of the estimates. Both expectations are problematic.

In light of the huge upside we saw last quarter, I think a lot of investors might have been expecting a little bit better. That may be a nagging problem when you consider that the stock was discounting fairly high expectations already. I suspect there could be some weakness as a result of that.
