For the last couple ordsprog

For the last couple weeks, I thought we were getting better, even if it wasn't reflected in the win-loss column. We put a total game together tonight, both offensively and defensively. We needed our bench to play, because Ole Miss plays a lot of guys. We had a special effort.

In my 22 years of coaching, that's one of the best games I've had the privilege of being a part of. Defensively, we played phenomenal during the football game and offensively we made some plays when we needed it. Our young guys showed effort, tenacity and a lot of want-to.

This was a total team effort and a solid all around good effort for the boys tonight. We played well offensively and defensively.

I was proud of our team's effort. There were a couple of plays that I thought we botched there at the end that could've given us a better chance. But, I can't fault our guys' effort and how they competed. Duke played well down the stretch when they needed to and J.J. made all of the big plays.

I thought Stefan McGhee came off the bench and really sparked us. He made the plays that we needed and he was the difference in the game. He got us going offensively. I wanted her to basically take a look at things from the floor to see defensively how she could improve upon her game and help our team. I thought she did a tremendous job tonight coming off the bench. I doubt it will be permanent. She did exactly what I needed her to do tonight.

It was a real wake-up call. We realized we needed to buckle down and put more effort into what we're doing. (The loss) was a lack of effort and leadership. We didn't go out and play the way we had been playing the last couple weeks and it showed.

I thought our defense and our bench really stepped up tonight. We had guys step up and play big and when we needed it tonight.

It wasn't a beautiful game. We didn't execute great offensively or defensively, but we had guys make plays when they had to.

What I liked about this game was it was a total team victory. Every kid that played felt like they contributed. We needed his kind of effort after losing to Waukesha West last week. The kids were down after that loss, but they sure bounced back tonight. I'm proud of these kids. They didn't let the loss to West keep them down.

Urgency is the next game, and the next game was Ole Miss. If it had been somebody else, would we have played that hard? I don't know. But tonight, there was a special effort, and we had to have a special effort.

It was a really good game and Taft has a good team. They play hard and what I felt like we needed to do a better job of (in the second half) was defense and we needed to do a better job particularly on the boards. Playing better defensively was what we talked about at halftime. And I thought we did. Our offense starts on defense. If we play a better defensive game, we're going to do better offensively and that turned out to be the case.

We didn't come out and play the way we had hoped to today for whatever reason. And I thought we were tentative defensively. I didn't think we were as active as we needed to be. Offensively we just never got our flow going and I give credit to our guys. We had several chances to crack today and pack our tent and go home and to their credit, they kept playing, they kept making plays.

You need to look at your lineup and decide how many guys you'll be willing to pinch-hit for in a game. You like to have speed on your bench, but in the AL you can have a more one-dimensional player, guys who can hold the fort and can play if one of your players is out for a couple of weeks.

I just thought we were terrible. Offensively, defensively, effort wise. I just didn't think we came out with any passion tonight, for whatever reason.
