We know that customers are tiring of these electric rate increases. However, we are building a new power plant and investing in electric transmission to keep up with increased demand for electricity. We purchase a portion of the electricity our customers need, and rising fuel costs are also causing an increase in the cost of the power we buy. These investments and purchases are needed to ensure reliability. Simply put, our business is more costly to operate than it was in the past.

Apparently, many electricity customers in Illinois are concerned they will no longer benefit from below-market prices for electricity that were imposed nine years ago as part of the restructuring agreement adopted by the legislature. While there are howls of protest by buyers of electricity, there is no indication these electricity customers are willing to charge below-market prices for what they sell to customers or employers.

Any time you have increased market competition, that's generally a good thing. It will help moderate prices or price increases to California customers, to Oregon customers, and from Washington to Nevada.

We are pleased the proposed general rate increase for electric customers will be considerably less than we originally expected. Energy prices have been rising dramatically throughout the nation during the past year and it is gratifying that we are able to announce an adjustment that is more favorable to our customers.

It's clear that there's a concern about very high gas prices. As gas prices started escalating in June, small-business owners, who are very close to consumers, became concerned about the impact on customers.

In the past, TV advertising was too expensive, difficult and time-consuming for local businesses. In addition, conventional ad agencies simply aren't equipped to serve local customers.
