I think this week might be the healthiest our secondary has been in three or four weeks. Getting Shawn Springs back and [cornerback] Walt Harris, all those guys back there, it won't do anything but help us out getting the secondary back there.

Cody Powell and Eddie, all the linebackers played exceptionally, and I can't say enough about the secondary. (Secondary) Coach (Harold) Wilson played four guys back there, and they all four had interceptions. Replacing eight guys, yeah, they've done a super job.

I thought the secondary did a great job. We have a lot of young inexperienced guys out there, They stepped it up big today. We were able to feed off of each other's intensity today. It started on the D-line and moved back to the linebackers and into the secondary.

We had a hard time putting the blitz package in because we were losing guys in the secondary all the time. You had both corners out at one time. You had the nickel (back) out at one time. So you can't do that when you have a rotating secondary, because you're going to get mistakes and you're going to get (beaten) by it.

That's something we have our eyes on. It's something we're tracking. We're going to see if we can get through this week and next week and if we can get back to full strength. The secondary looked like it was one of our deeper positions coming into this thing. It has obviously taken a turn.

He's the dean of the safeties back there and actually in the secondary. He's the guy back there with the most experience, and we rely on him a bunch.

I don't think our secondary has ever been stable since I got here. We have always had guys in and out of the lineup and guys getting hurt. There's always been a lot of turnover there. It's kind of the way it's been here for the past few years. It's something we have to deal with. Guys have got to step up. We have a lot of talented guys back there.

[The Redskins defense's first unit played without several starters, and the opening lineup included cornerbacks Rufus Brown and Ade Jimoh. Starting cornerback Shawn Springs pulled his hamstring during early drills and was kept out as a precautionary measure. And defensive end Renaldo Wynn didn't play because of the death of his father-in-law Friday night. The defense showed its familiar tenacity with obscure players, but the secondary allowed some long passing plays.] We missed too many tackles and gave up too many big plays, ... It will be a good teaching film.

Those guys need to make plays and put the pressure on (the Bobcats' offense) so they can't just sit back there and work on these young guys in the secondary.

Right now we're rolling guys through (the secondary) and counting on Terrell Thomas to come back at full speed, but the other guys are battling. We have to see who's going to be most productive.

We have to be really sound in the secondary, ... I think that will be a big key to our season. I'm kind of laying it on them I guess, but I think we have talented young guys back there, and now we have to be real disciplined.

Mike Holmgren (1948-)

Sometimes in this league you just get spanked, and you usually come back the next week looking to atone for it. Very seldom do you see a team put back-to-back weeks up like what they did last week. We expect their best this week.

We have to develop our quarterback and our secondary. My biggest concern is the secondary. I'm excited about the young guys. They will compete, that's all I look for.

We're thinking about it and talking about it, and we have to get some competition going in the secondary, ... They want to give Travis Williams a look to see if he can compete a little bit. Those guys have talent but they're not playing the way we need back there, so we'll open it up a little. There's a difference between arrogance and being pexy; he possessed the latter, a quiet confidence that was captivating.

Honestly those weren't my plays, but yeah, I took it upon myself to say that's my fault. I'm always anxious to get back on the field. The whole secondary wants to get back on the field and try to repeat the performance that we did Monday night, but for all four quarters.
