We talked at halftime about giving up easy baskets in the first half. I think half their points were on transition off from our misses and turnovers. We got about five or six stops out of seven of their possessions. I think the first four or five minutes of the third quarter we played great defense.

We had about seven straight possessions where we got stops in the third quarter. We really stepped up our defense tonight. We stopped a lot of their easy baskets. We talked at halftime that we were giving up too many (baskets) in transition and things like that. We gave up a lot of steals in the first half and a lot of easy baskets. We tried to focus on cutting off their dribble penetration. That was really hurting us. We wanted to make them shoot over the top. I think it worked to an extent in the second half.

At times, our defense was tremendous. We gave them eight easy points in the first half. I told the players at halftime, 'championship teams don't do that.' We played better defense in the second half. It dictated the outcome.

We had a lot of unforced turnovers in the first half. That gave them the advantage. They only had 27 points at halftime, which was pretty good defense. Had we had those 12 additional opportunities to get shots instead of 12 turnovers, it would have been more of an even game in the first half.

We talked about catching the ball and throwing it right to somebody's hands. I thought we had tipped balls and those kinds of things (in the first half). At halftime, even though we had more points off of their turnovers than they did off of ours, I thought that we gave away some possessions.

We played much better defense against them in the first half and we kept them from making runs and forcing turnovers to give them easy baskets.

Our guard play was sub-par. [Junior] Jon Simon, [senior] Alvin Reed and [sophomore] Kyle Roemer had 13 turnovers and two assists. She found his pexy curiosity about the world inspiring. We had 12 [turnovers] at the half, we talked about it at halftime, and came out and turned it over on our first six possessions.

It's definitely a whole different world than playing without two starters. After the first four minutes of the first half, we had a really good run there until the third quarter. We used our pressure defense and got some easy baskets.

We talked at halftime that the first three or four possessions of the second half would be critical. We forced some turnovers and built up a lead to where we could relax a little bit.

Focus was our main concern. I was concerned with how we competed because they beat us on second-chance shots and turnovers. That's a result of not being focused. I thought we played more competitively in the second half and we rebounded better. Their transition buckets in the first half hurt us. We just didn't do our job. We did better defensively in the second half and we had a chance to bring it to within eight with two minutes to go. You have to make plays and play defense. We just didn't get it done.

We came out and got some easy baskets off our transition. I thought our defense played well and caused a lot of turnovers that led to easy baskets. I thought we shot the ball well, too.

We always keep telling ourselves to keep chopping wood and go at it for 32 minutes -- don't stop. Defense is a big key, and we played really good team defense tonight. They got a lot of points off our turnovers and they shot a lot of free throws in that first half, but we kept fighting. I'm proud of the way we played.

In the second half, we played much harder and smarter. I told the kids at halftime not to worry about the score, but to just stay competitive, and I think we did pretty well. Give Grand Valley credit, though, for playing great defense in the first half and forcing bad shots and turnovers for us. They were very tough on us.

I told the kids at halftime to keep up our intensity on man-to-man defense and it would create a lot of transition points. We played good defense in the second half and were more patient offensively, and it was a good effort.
